I began the painting with pastels to give a rough outline of where I applied the paint. Next I wanted to paint as I have painted previously – with a linear approach in mind, to fill out all of the areas with the darkest tones from the background towards the foreground.
I have found painting oil on wood has been very pleasing, as it sets somewhat quicker than it would on canvas, and it also tends to give an enamel shine like that of varnished wood.
My next steps will involve a smaller brush to work on detail and texture, and I will next need to take photographs of people posed in a similar stance to the subjects I have created here.
